Local Woman Buys Vests for BPD K-9 Dogs

A Cheektowaga woman has dug deep into her own pockets to help out the Buffalo Police Department. Wednesday afternoon at Buffalo Police Headquarters, Commissioner H. McCarthy Gipson recognized 68 year old Joan Lewandowski after she spent $1,200.00 of her own money on new bullet proof vests for the department's two newest K-9 members. Commissioner Gipson presented Lewandowski with a citation and a commerative patch for her generosity and kindness.

Lewandowski said she did it after recently learning that the Buffalo Police Department had added the two new K-9 dogs. Shortly after that, she said she saw a T.V. program regarding police dogs and vests. At that point, she decided to see how she could help out. And as they say, the rest is history. On behalf of the department, Commissioner Gipson thanked the Cheektowaga woman for thinking of the dog's safety and well being.

The department has four K-9 dogs in all and Commissioner Gipson said he's looking for ways to buy two more vests for the other police dogs. The Commissioner stressed how invaluable the work of the dogs and their handlers have been. He pointed to the dangerous assignments the dogs are usually invloved in, including this week's raids involving violent street gangs.
