Mayor Announces Arrest in West Side Stabbing of Teenager

Tips from Community Lead to Arrest

Mayor Byron W. Brown today announced an arrest in last week’s fatal stabbing on the city’s West Side. A sixteen-year-old male was fatally stabbed on Vermont Street, between 16th Street and Lowell Place, just after 8 p.m. on Thursday night.

Homicide detectives arrested 17-year-old Muridi Mohamed of Vermont Street and charged him with murder in the second degree.

“There were many witnesses to the fight Thursday night. Fortunately, members of the community have once again come forward to help the Buffalo Police Department solve this tragic incident,” said Mayor Brown. “I encourage residents to continue using the confidential Buffalo Police Tip Call Line because their participation helps police in solving crimes and reducing overall crime in the city.”

A fight broke out among a large number of youths on Vermont Street and during the quarrel, 16-year-old Dai'John Johnson was stabbed. Johnson was taken to Buffalo General Hospital by ambulance. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Mohamed was charged by Homicide Squad Detective James A. Lema, who was assisted in the investigation and arrest by Detectives Salvatore Valvo and Sergeant James P. Lonergan. Mohamed was booked early Sunday morning, and is currently being held at the Erie County Holding Center.
