Buffalo police added 38 new officers during commencement ceremonies on Friday, July 20th at The Buffalo Academy for Visual and Performing Arts. A near packed auditorium welcomed new officers from Buffalo, State Attorney General’s Office, New York State University Police, Town of Brant and the Town of Tonawanda during the 119th Basic Course for Police Officers. Mayor Byron W. Brown and Police Commissioner Daniel Derenda congratulated the new recruits. Mayor Brown said the new Buffalo officers are joining the ranks at a time when the city of Buffalo is experiencing a renaissance with its developing waterfront, the expanding downtown medical campus, new housing and the continued reduction in crime. Commissioner Derenda said the latest additions to the force bring the total number of officers to well over 700. The new officers will continue to do field training until the fall when they officially hit the streets. The Buffalo Police Academy is under the direction of Captain Patrick Mann.
